With the government of Jharkhand aiming to build a health corridor in the state, ESL Steel has aligned itself to improve the state’s health infrastructure and help it cope with the second wave of the pandemic. Also supporting Vedanta’s commitment to the health and safety of each of its employees, community members and business partners, ESL Steel Limited has taken all possible measures to protect all of its stakeholders from this pandemic.
Recently, the Honorable Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren, virtually inaugurated the 100-bed Vedanta COVID Care field hospital. The hospital has 10 intensive care beds, 10 intensive care units on standby, 40 childcare units and 40 oxygen beds for COVID patients.
The field hospital will act as an extension of Sadar Hospital in Bokaro with the most experienced and trusted doctors in the district closely monitoring patients.
Appreciating Vedanta ESL’s COVID relief initiatives, Jharkhand Honorable Chief Minister Hemant Soren said, “I am grateful to the Vedanta Group and President Anil Agarwal, for building a modern and well-equipped hospital in a short period of time. time. I am sure this field hospital will serve as a COVID relief center not only for Bokaro but also for neighboring districts – Giridih, Dhanbad and Ramgarh. My government is ready to build a health corridor in Jharkhand. I want to free Jharkhand from COVID and other diseases like malnutrition and tuberculosis. Along with this, we are also focusing on education, rural empowerment and industrial development with the help of companies like Vedanta. Together with the district and state administration, the steel company has constantly rolled out new initiatives to help overcome the second wave of the pandemic which has wreaked havoc across India.
Following government demands, ESL Steel Limited delivered around 500 oxygen cylinders during the pandemic period. Simultaneously, around 500 metric tons of liquid medical oxygen were supplied to Jharkhand, Bihar and Punjab. Apart from this, ESL is committed to supplying 5,500 oxygen regulators to the district and state government.

In 2020, ESL supported the district administration by distributing food, refreshments and dry rations to more than 80,100 beneficiaries.
Always committed to community well-being
The ESL CSR team has so far organized six vaccination camps and vaccinated 579 villagers.
The company delivered life-saving equipment to CSE Hospital, Chandankiyari, Bokaro and organized COVID awareness and prevention campaigns in 20 villages among its stakeholders such as the community, activists and PRI members.
Recently, ESL hosted a webinar to educate 300 members of self-help groups (SHGs) and rural women in Bokaro. The webinar, organized as part of ESL’s JIVIKA project, taught women how to fight Covid-19 while emphasizing the importance of vaccination. Members were also briefed on ways to protect themselves and their family members from Covid-19. The webinar shed light on some crucial facts about COVID and oriented women to the resources available in the community for them. In addition, the steel major gave them masks and disinfectants as a token of care.
In 2020, the women of the SHG made 10,380 masks. With the same courage and the same hard work, they began the process of manufacturing an additional 5,000 masks this year.
Employees and Business Partners – ESL’s Top Priority
ESL vaccinated nearly 4,000 of its employees and business partners through several camps held at the company’s factory premises.
For ESL, its employees are a priority. The company distributed more than 3,000 PPE kits to its staff, district administration, state government and frontline workers during the pandemic. About 5,050 bottles of disinfectant were distributed to ESL workers, neighboring villages and the government. ESL considers its employees as its strength, with whose cooperation and courage ESL goes forward today, overcoming all difficult situations.

In collaboration with the district administration and the health department, a vaccination camp was held last week at the COVID field hospital in Vedanta Cares.
The camp, which saw active participation, was aimed at people aged 18 to 44. ESL also plans to organize more in the future.
